B9 deficiency and elevated homocysteine
A lack of vitamin B9 (folate) leads to increased levels of the amino acid homocysteine. Excessively high levels of this amino acid can be a source of various problems.
While it is true that a lack of folate (B9) in pregnant women can be problematic for the development of the fetus, it is also true that such a deficiency can lead to a weakening of bone structure or cause problems with various organ functions later in life. According to the EFSA, folate (or B9 or in any case the natural form of folic acid) contributes to normal homocysteine metabolism, i.e. it ensures that homocysteine levels are controlled and not too high.
This means that, contrary to what one might think, folate and folic acid supplements are not only intended for pregnant women, but for all groups of people who want to optimize their well-being and maintain this condition for as long as possible.
Exhaustion and tiredness
Tiredness and fatigue are two factors that often occur during and after pregnancy. Many people have experienced feeling very tired at least once or at some point in their lives. This condition is often linked to a lack of B vitamins.
** Folate contributes (again according to official EFSA data) to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
An adequate intake of folate, i.e. vitamin B9, can be a valuable ally in daily supplementation and for general well-being. Folate also contributes to normal amino acid synthesis. Folate also contributes to normal amino acid synthesis.
Expectant mothers and pregnancy. A correct daily intake of folic acid is very important before and during pregnancy. Additional folic acid intake increases maternal folate levels. A low maternal folate level is a risk factor for the development of neural tube defects in the developing fetus.
